Gunnar Henderson’s Two-Homer, Five-RBI Night Lifts Orioles Past Athletics
Baltimore erased an early three-run deficit with six unanswered runs across the fourth and fifth innings at Sutter Health Park.
Final: Baltimore Orioles 8 — 5 Athletics
Gunnar Henderson carried Baltimore’s offense from the top of the lineup, going 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored as the Orioles defeated the Athletics 8-5. Oakland led 5-1 after three innings, but Baltimore scored three times in both the fourth and fifth to seize control. Henderson reached base in every at-bat and drove in five of the Orioles’ eight runs, turning a back-and-forth start into a decisive road victory.
The Athletics struck first, scoring twice in the opening inning and adding single runs in the second and third. Brian Serven supplied Oakland’s biggest individual punch with a 2-for-4 performance that included a two-run homer, while Lawrence Butler added two RBIs. Jeffrey Springs kept the Athletics competitive with six strikeouts over 4.2 innings, and Scott Blewett followed with four strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings, but Oakland could not protect its early advantage.
Baltimore’s response came through its middle-of-the-order power. Henderson homered twice and scored three times, while Coby Mayo added a three-run homer in a 1-for-4, three-RBI performance. The Orioles scored six runs over the fourth and fifth innings, the stretch that flipped the game from a 5-1 deficit into a 7-5 Baltimore lead. Chris Bassitt allowed five earned runs in 5.2 innings but struck out four and held the line long enough for the offense to complete the comeback; Baltimore added an insurance run in the eighth and kept Oakland scoreless over the final six innings.
The Orioles moved to 68-69 by winning the game’s central battle: they absorbed Oakland’s early pressure, then converted their own power chances when the margin narrowed. Henderson’s production gives Baltimore a clear offensive foundation moving forward, while the Athletics, now 53-84, remain defined by missed opportunities after building a four-run lead and failing to score after the third inning.
