The win moved Tampa Bay to 80-54 and reinforced the Rays’ ability to turn a modest early edge into a decisive result through lineup depth and timely power. San Diego fell to 72-63 despite Merrill’s productive night and a brief middle-inning rally; the Padres will need more consistent run prevention and earlier offensive resistance to avoid allowing games to be decided before their late push begins.
