Michael Wacha Delivers Eight Shutout Innings as Royals Blank Guardians 3-0
Kansas City broke a scoreless game in the fifth, then secured the win with two ninth-inning runs behind Wacha's 10-strikeout performance.
Final: Kansas City Royals 3 — 0 Cleveland Guardians
Michael Wacha controlled Progressive Field for eight innings, striking out 10 and allowing Kansas City to protect a narrow lead without exposing its bullpen to a late-game test. The Royals scored once in the fifth and twice in the ninth to finish a 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Wacha's command and swing-and-miss stuff turned every Cleveland threat into another opportunity for Kansas City to preserve its advantage.
The game stayed scoreless through four innings before Kansas City broke through in the fifth. Wacha kept Cleveland off the board for the next three innings, completing eight frames with 10 strikeouts and a 3.32 ERA. Steven Cruz handled the ninth with two strikeouts, completing the shutout and giving the Royals a clean finish after their offense added two insurance runs in the final inning.
Carter Jensen supplied the decisive damage for Kansas City, going 1-for-5 with a two-run home run, two RBI and one run scored. Isaac Collins and Jac Caglianone each collected two hits, giving the Royals enough traffic to support Wacha despite a modest three-run output. Tanner Bibee kept Cleveland within reach through six innings with five strikeouts, while Craig Yoho added two scoreless innings and three strikeouts, but the Guardians' offense never produced a scoring answer. Patrick Bailey was Cleveland's lone consistent threat, going 2-for-3 in a shutout that left the Guardians unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
The Royals moved to 61-75 with a road win built on starting-pitch dominance and timely power, while Cleveland fell to 68-67 after being held scoreless at home. Kansas City showed the value of a deep outing from Wacha and a decisive ninth-inning cushion; Cleveland must find more offensive pressure if it is going to convert competitive pitching performances into wins.
